We have had a really enjoyable, relaxing last week of term after the excitement of our nativity play last week. Thankyou so much for all those who attended on Friday, the children were fantastic and I am really proud of what they achieved.

This week we have enjoyed a Santa fun run to raise money for the school council. It was extremely muddy but an enjoyable experience. Mr Simmonds had to run round with all of us dressed as Santa. He wasn't very fast!

We had a brilliant afternoon watching and participating in the talent show. We saw some fantastic singing, dancing, acting and many more talents. Year 6 did a fantastic job hosting it but their jokes needed a bit of work!

We had a very noisy and exuberant class party yesterday afternoon with lots of dancing and singing, topped off with a surprise visit from Santa.

Thankyou for all your support this term. All of the children have worked extremely hard and have earned a good rest. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and I look forward to seeing you all back in the new year!

Hi all,

We have been really busy practising our nativity this week. The children have been working really hard and are excited for the performance. This will be at 10am on Friday 11th December. We hope to see as many of you there as possible.

For homework this week, I have sent out the words to the song 'Away in a manger.' Please could you practise this with your child over the weekend. I have also set some maths work on Abacus for the children to complete.

Have a lovely weekend!

Hi all,

We have had another busy week this week! In English we have been studying poetry and learning about rhyme and rhythm. We have have written our own poems, learnt them off by heart and performed them.

In maths, we have been working really hard on adding and subtracting multiples of ten using money. We have really impressed Miss Lawrance with our perseverance!

Today we really enjoyed decorating Pudsey Bear biscuits to raise money for Children in Need. We are still waiting for some money to come in and then we will let you know how much we have raised. Here are some photos of our biscuits.

A busy week to come....

As you probably are all aware, we will be celebrating World Week in school next week. There will be lots of fun activities based around Maths, English, Science and RE culminating in Year 2's class assembly on Friday. We hope to see as many of you there as possible.

I will be sending out any lines that the children need to practise at home on Monday. On the homework sheet, I have given details of costumes that we will be needing. If any of the children have animal onesies that they would be willing to let us borrow, could these be brought in no later than Tuesday. We will also be needing some coloured t-shirts in the following colours:

  • blue
  • green
  • brown
  • red
  • orange
  • yellow
  • white
  • pink
If you have any that you would be willing to let us borrow, please ensure they are clearly labelled with your child's name before sending them in.

We are also looking for some flags for some of the different countries that our families are from. If you have one that you could lend us, I will ensure it is returned to you after the assembly.

Thankyou and we look forward to seeing you all on Friday!

Year 2's trip to Waitrose

We have had a really busy and fun week this week. On Wednesday, Mrs Stocks took the class to Waitrose as part of our 'Healthy Humans' topic in Science. We had a tour of the store and then visited the really cold freezer. The lady that showed us around was called Sarah and she told use we might find a polar bear because it was so cold!

We had the chance to try different fruit juices and some unusual fruits including something called a kiwiberry and some pomegranate seeds. We also sampled some olive bread which was delicious.

We learnt all about eating a healthy diet and which foods we should eat more of and which we should have less of. We learnt about the importance of exercise and why it is really good for our bodies.

Here are some photos from our trip!

Finally, just a couple of reminders. Our class assembly is on the 16th of October. Hopefully we will see lots of you there! Also, as the weather becomes colder over the next few weeks it is important that your child has warm clothes to put over the top of their PE kit when we have outdoor PE. Please could you also try to send your child in with trainers for outdoor PE as plimsolls are not suitable for running around in when the ground is wet and slippery.

Have a lovely weekend!

Welcome to Year 2 Blog!

Welcome to Year2L blog. Each week we will post updates and photos of what we have been learning in class along with any diary dates and important information.

Our first blog will be tomorrow and we look forward to sharing everything we did on our trip to Waitrose.

On Monday there was great excitement in Year 2 as our hen eggs arrived and one chick hatched on the way! When we came in on Tuesday morning another chick had hatched in the night and another hatched as teachers arrived in school. A fourth chick tried very hard to hatch on Tuesday but by the end of the day it was still not free of its shell and was helped to freedom by Miss Lawrance!

The incubator and brooder were move to Year 2M on Wednesday morning and another chick hatched giving us a total of 6 chicks. By the end of Thursday they were all in the brooder and happily cheeping away. Mrs Jackson- Robbins has taken them home for the weekend and I am sure her children will be very excited.
The chicks are growing very quickly and hopefully now that they are stronger the children will get the opportunity to handle them next week.

We are all looking forward to our trip to Ashridge on Wednesday and looking at the weather forecast we are in for a very hot week. Can I please remind you that we cannot apply sun cream and I would ask that you ensure you do this before the children arrive in school and particularly on Wednesday morning.

We have a very busy week ahead of us and look forward to seeing many of you at our Celebration Evening. Your children will be singing some of the songs we have been learning for the  Year 2 Music Festival.

Sunday, 17 May 2015

On Thursday during our RE lesson on the Ascension, the children worked in their Houses to create and perform a Liturgical dance based on how the disciples felt when Jesus left them and how they felt when He sent the Holy Spirit. The children listened to piano music that started of sad but as the music progressed it became happier. The children worked cooperatively together and thoughtfully performed their dance. <

In PE the children played a very successful game of Rounders – over the last few weeks they have been learning the rules and have become more skilled when fielding. Next week will be the last week of Rounders and on Thursday both Year 2 classes take part in an Inter-house Rounders competition.

We hope you had the opportunity to enjoy the sun this weekend

Dear Parents

In Science we are investigating living things and habitats and the children have been looking for creatures around the school grounds. We have been thinking about the 7 processes of life and they were introduced to MRS NERG last week! Ask them if they can tell you about her and what the letters in her name stand for.

We have been learning about Ascension in RE and the children worked very thoughtfully in their groups to write prayers from the disciples when Jesus left them to go to His Father.

In English we have been reading The Sheep Pig and the children are now writing their own extended stories in the style of Dick King -Smith. The children have written the beginning of their story and will add to it over the next two weeks.

Our class election last week was a great success and the children voted democratically for their preferred candidate. They were very enthusiastic and motivated and were able to explain to a visitor the preparation of a manifesto, party policies and the voting process.

We have been working on word problems in maths requiring quick recall of number bonds to 20, doubling and halving numbers up to 100 and beyond. It would be good if you can support your child in reinforcing quick recall using simple games such as ping pong - the children will be able to explain this to you. Using Matheletics is also a good way to consolidate these skills.

We have been discussing with the children ideas of an activity we could do as a class to raise money for Nepal. If you get a chance, please discuss this with your child and we will make a decision as a class at the end of this week and will let you know the outcome.

Many thanks for your continued support

Dear Parents

Another exciting and eventful week at school!

Today prior to our Science, Engineering and Maths week our assembly was led by Ed Brown - a Rocket Scientist, who explained to the children how Satellites are made and launched into space. Ask your child to tell you what they have learned - do they know what materials are used to build them and how are they launched into space.

One of the homework tasks this week is linked to our Science week. The children need to design a seed from space. We have discussed seed dispersal in class and a website link which may be helpful is

http://www2.bgfl.org/bgfl2/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks2/science/plants_pt2/dispersal.htm

The children will be making their ‘seed’ in school next week from recycled materials. If you have any materials at home that might be suitable, please do send them in with your child during the week.

We know many of you have asked for guidance in terms of comprehension questions when reading with your child at home and we are at present putting together a booklet which we will send out next week to give you some ideas. We will also send home a list of spelling words for Year 2 from the New Curriculum.

Our Mothers’ Liturgy was a lovely way to end the week and we were very proud of all the children and they were delighted to celebrate this occasion with you. We hope Mum’s have a restful day on Sunday and the children treat you to breakfast in bed.

Happy Mothers’ Day
